French Drain Solutions: Effective Runoff Management in Shellharbour

Resolving Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour

A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a pressing issue with water ingress that was worsening over time. Rainwater from two higher neighbouring properties began to flow into the yard and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This unwanted water intrusion caused damage to the flooring, encouraged rising damp, and resulted in mould growth within the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

How Can You Determine the Cause of Water Ingress?

The issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the rear and side yards of neighbouring properties. Without an effective drainage system to intercept this influx, the water was forced to flow beneath the house.

Developing a Comprehensive Drainage Solution

CS Plumbing crafted and implemented a gravity-fed French drain system specifically designed to capture and redirect water before it could affect the home’s foundation.

The project featured several crucial components:

  • A French drain system expertly designed to collect both surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, equipped with strategically drilled holes to ensure effective discharge.
  • Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes to replace the original smaller pipes, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
  • A robust retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled by an excavator to create a sturdy barrier against the adjacent yard.
  • Efficient soil removal on-site, facilitated by a dumper for streamlined management of the construction area.

What Measures Can You Implement for Efficient Water Management?

The newly installed drainage system now effectively captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is directed away from the home. This solution provides the homeowner with a resilient, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
